Brussels OCMW Supports Tenants by Limiting Rent Indexation

In a time of rising rents and economic uncertainty, the OCMW of Brussels has taken a significant step to support tenants. With an allocation of nearly 500,000 euros, the OCMW aims to help tenants cope with the impact of recent rent increases. This measure comes at a time when many households are struggling to make ends meet due to the rising cost of living.

What Does This Measure Involve?

In 2022, the OCMW of Brussels decided to assist tenants facing rent increases above the 5% indexation limit. Specifically, the OCMW will cover the difference between the actual rent increase and the legally allowed 5% indexation. This amount will be immediately deducted from the rent in December 2022.

For example, if a tenant pays a monthly rent of 500 euros and their rent is increased by 8.4%, this results in a 42-euro increase. The OCMW will cover the additional 3.4% increase (equivalent to 204 euros), so the tenant will only be responsible for the 5% increase. This financial support ensures that tenants are not burdened by excessive rent hikes.

Support for Commercial Tenants as Well

The support is not limited to residential tenants. The OCMW is also offering assistance to commercial tenants who are struggling, especially those whose business turnover has decreased by more than 25%. These business owners will receive similar help to ease their rent costs, allowing them to navigate the challenges of the rental market without jeopardizing their operations.

OCMW Brussels: A Lifeline During Tough Times

The OCMW of Brussels manages a property portfolio consisting of about 2,100 residential tenants and nearly 200 commercial tenants. Through this financial measure, the organization aims to make a real difference for Brussels residents facing rising rents. The OCMW's support provides welcome relief to many families and businesses during difficult financial times.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by various agencies in Belgium to mitigate the effects of price increases, particularly in energy and housing. By offering this support, the OCMW of Brussels not only demonstrates solidarity with its tenants but also emphasizes the importance of supporting vulnerable groups in society.
